Angola USA

Angola Maximum Security Prison was at one time the most violent in the US but has undergone a transformation under the wardenship of Burl Cain, who has expanded the annual Prisoners Rodeo into an event that attracts over ten thousand spectators. Whilst it is dismissed by many as barbaric, others claim the rodeo serves as a distraction for the prisoners of Angola, 71% of whom are serving life sentences, which in Louisiana means that the only way they will leave the prison is in a coffin.

The rest of Angola's inmates are serving sentences averaging 91 years. Due to the length of the sentences and the crimes committed, most prisoners are forgotten by their families, roughly 80% of prisoners receive no visitors. On average a third of inmates who die in the prison are buried in one of the prisons two cemetaries.
