I photographed John Rutter at his home for the New York Times. He has a beautiful garden that backs onto the river Great Ouse and as we were walking out into his garden, a crow flew out of a nearby tree towards the river. John said ‘He’s gone to tell the Swan I’m here’. I laughed, thinking he was joking, but he assured me that it was true. Sure enough, about two minutes later we heard this thumping noise and I saw the swan flying down the river towards us, John ran off to get some bread and then the Swan came into the garden to be fed. It was a truly magical moment.
